The Startup2Startup London powered by Oury Clark, on the 2nd July, 2015 marked the successful launch of the Europe Edition of the event at the magnificent venue - Vinopolis on the London Bridge. The theme of the event was "Building Value to Exit" & had Andrew Oury - Partner - Oury Clark, Tony Askew - Partner - Reed Elsevier, Brigitte Baumann - European Angel Investor of the year 2014 & Kaushal Chokshi - Chairman - Scaale Group on the panel.
The event was attended by over 50 select entrepreneurs & investors from Spain, Sweden, Estonia and Finland that included VCs, Angel networks & family offices.
Moderated by Tom Day, UK-Head for Scaale group, the panel discussed the importance of building business models focussed on monetization & keeping an eventual exit in mind. They also shared the key of choosing the right investors, especially early on, along the funding path who have the potential to add strategic value to the venture. As echoed by the panelists, strategic partnerships played a key role in scaling up one's venture in countries that one does not intend to allocate its own resources to tap the market. While Brigitte shared a few of her examples where she has invested cross border, Tony brought a VC fund's perspective of assessing startups. With regards to timing of exit,Kaushal mentioned that it depends on whether the team is equipped to run a venture that is expected to assume a larger scale in the coming future, is what would define the stage of exit for an investor. Andrew Oury threw light on the regulatory aspects of cross border investing & importance of choosing the right jurisdictions for access to better capital.
Following the Panel discussion were the round table discussions, where the subject Building Value to Exit, was deliberated in further details with each venture or investor putting the same in perspective to the venture/fund. Some of the key insights that came from the round table discussion were the fact that it is critical to plan the funding roadmap especially in the earlier rounds, importance of choosing the right sales channels & the go-to market strategy. While Ivar Siimar, Director, Estonian BAN, shared how Estonian ventures focus on creating a global business model & Vesa Parella, part of Finnish BAN brought forth the need to interact with other angel eco-systems to bring further liquidity for the local startups.
The entrepreneurs, other than network with investors found sufficient time to explain the business model with the attendees which created several business opportunities for their ventures. The Europe's launch of Startup2Startup was thus a value addition session & an open interactive conference for investors & entrepreneurs, primarily based on its innovative format.
